yesterday, a friend gifted me a game called far from noise, with a little note saying she thought i’d like it. i downloaded it and played it almost immediately; she was right, i liked it a lot. it’s a quiet little game, where all you do is have a conversation and observe. it felt, in some ways, like a cross between two of my favorite games: kentucky route zero and night in the woods.
in it, you play as a character teetering on the edge of a cliff, hanging between life and death. at one point, your companion says (to your disbelief): “above all else, we have hope.”
i’ve talked a lot about hope since starting this newsletter. we live in dark times and i think we could all use a little bit of light, a little bit of beauty, a little bit of hope.
the six of arrows represents a journey - sometimes literal, but often metaphorical. it’s the promise of recovery after hard times. it’s the sense that we can move forward from difficulty. i am particularly struck, today, by the image of a raft at sea, and the feeling that even a raft festooned with arrows is better than none at all.
we have made it here, to the end of 2018, darlings. i wish you a happy new year, and may it be full of hope.
