i have always found comfort in the idea of cycles. it started, probably, with the academic year and its rhythms, but once i left academia i really started to pay attention to nature, and the seasons, and the way that (to paraphrase annie dillard) seasons are generalizations more than anything. i started to notice when the first blooms started to appear, or the first autumn leaves. i could tell when they were early, or late.
and then, of course, there is my love, the moon. i love her cyclical nature so much i tattooed her phases on my body.
more recently i have been pairing those natural cycles with the cycles of astrology (though one could say that as astrology tracks the movements of planets and other space matter, it is also natural). by that i mean knowing - for instance - that right now we are in the thick of leo season but also that mercury goes retrograde three times a year, which is why it can sometimes feel like it’s always in retrograde or about to be.
this particular wheel of fortune makes room for both, or more, or all. there are astrological symbols lining the outside of the wheel, and the inside, as the personal space guidebook says:
features two tattooed hands, one a combined illustration of four alchemical symbols, and the other a tattoo of the Wheel of Hermes. The hands remind us that while the spiritual wheel might always be in motion - logic, intellect, and wisdom serve as the axle that keeps the wheel balanced.
as i’m sure most of you know by now, i’m a libra, so obviously the idea of balance is very appealing to me. i’m prone to living almost entirely in my own head, so it’s important for me to balance that out with something physical - usually, these days especially, walking in nature. (my nature these days are city parks and sidewalk weeds, but i love it still.)
this week, darlings, see what you can do to seek out your own balance. stay safe.
